How to decorate with the colour grey

Grey is such a timeless colour choice, which has been popular in interior design for years. However, it can be difficult to incorporate it into your home without it looking dull or lifeless, and getting the right balance of grey and colour can be tricky. Here’s how to use grey in your home to create an inviting space.

Mix shades of grey

One of the issues of using grey is that it can look quite flat. By using different shades of grey, you can still achieve depth and interest while maintaining a monochromatic colour palette. By punctuating a space with darker and lighter shades, it helps our eye to travel around the room and results in a more interesting space.

Add texture

To stop grey looking monotonous, adding different textures helps to create some more depth and interest and a sense of warmth and cosiness.

Texture can come from a number of places - through materials like velvet, wool and linen, and natural materials like wood and stone. Decorative elements can also add texture and elevate a grey room, like wall panels or wallpaper. Metals can also add texture and warmth, especially if in warm tone like gold, copper or brass.

Use accent colours

Grey is a great neutral base colour, and injecting some brighter colours via accents helps to create a more dynamic and interesting looking room.

When choosing an accent colour, think about the kind of atmosphere you want to create in the room. Bright colours like yellow, red and orange create a lively and playful feeling, or you can evoke some calm with blues and greens.

Add pattern

Pattern is another way to add interest and depth to a grey scheme. Whether you prefer a bold and statement pattern or an understated and subtle one, there are so many to choose from to suit your tastes.

Patterns can be introduced through soft furnishings like throws, cushions and rugs, or on the wall through wallpaper and art.

Style with plants

Plants are a great way to add life into any space, especially a grey one. Not only do they add a natural element into a room, but they also add colour and texture. A mixture of hanging plants, tall plants and succulents help bring a sense of nature and energy into a room.
