10 ways to update your home for Spring

As I write this post, it’s 2 degrees outside and my hands are cold while I wait for the central heating to kick in. However, I’m choosing to ignore this and turn my thoughts towards the fact that Spring is on the way - meaning brighter evenings and colours are around the corner.

With that in mind, here’s some ways that you can bring Spring into your home.

1. Update your bedding

This is such an easy way to update the feel of your bedroom - your bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in there, so updating the bedding can make quite a big visual difference to the room.

Switching up your bedding to lighter colours or floral patterns (Florals? for Spring? Groundbreaking…) is a simple but effective way to bring some Spring into your space. Even adding a bedspread or cushions in an uplifting colour will breathe some freshness into your room.

2. Swap out sofa cushions and throws

One quick and simple way to refresh the look of your living room is to update the cushions and throws on your sofa. During the winter, thick throws and cosy cushions give some much needed warmth and comfort - but you can swap these out for something fresher and uplifting for Spring.

3. Reposition furniture

As the weather improves, so does the views from our windows! During the dark evenings, armchairs and side tables can be positioned to create inward facing cosy nooks, but when the evenings are lighter there’s an opportunity to move our seating to appreciate the view.

Creating a seating area next to a window with a side table gives you a space to enjoy a morning coffee while admiring the outdoors.

4. Add greenery

The Spring time is when plants start to focus their energy on growing new buds and leaves, so it’s a great time to add some greenery and nature into your space.

It’s worth researching the best plant to get for your specific light conditions, but if you put a plant in it’s ideal spot it will reward you with growing new leaves throughout the Spring and into the Summer.

5. Re-style shelves

This is another really easy way to refresh a room with not too much effort. Switching up your accessories can breathe some new life into a space, and adding some bright and uplifting pieces will breathe some Spring into your room.

Any surface can be styled - whether it’s alcove or floating shelves, a sideboard or a console table.

6. Add a new accent colour

I’ve talked a few times on this blog about the 70/30/10 rule - which is the idea that 70% of your room is one colour (your base colour, for example on the walls), 30% is your secondary colour (furniture, rugs) and 10% is your accent colour which is scattered around via accessories and artwork.

In the Spring, you could switch out your accent colour with a brighter colour for the season. For example, say your 70% is navy blue, your 30% is grey, and in the winter you have ochre as your 10% accent colour. Swapping out your ochre accents with sage green still works with your colour scheme, whilst creating a fresher overall look.

7. Mix up your artwork

Switching out your art is a great way of refreshing a room without making permanent or costly changes.

Whether it’s photography, drawings, paintings or abstract art, you can introduce the freshness and colours of Spring on your walls.

8. Change your lampshades

Layered lighting is such an important part of creating a cosy and comfortable space, and sometimes we overlook the fact that lamps can also contribute colour and pattern into a room even when they’re not switched on.

If you’re updating the accent colour in your room (see point 6…) or just want to bring some new decor, you can do this by changing your lampshades.

9. Add fresh flowers

For me, this is one of the best parts of Spring - the flowers that start to emerge. I always buy a £1 bunch of daffodils whenever I’m in M&S, or tulips from the supermarket - having fresh flowers in your home is always lovely but especially in the Spring.

10. Update your window dressings

Closing the curtains to retain heat and creating a cosy atmosphere is necessary in the Winter, but as the evenings get lighter in the Spring, it’s nice to be able to maximise this. Replacing your heavy curtains with lighter ones (either in thickness or in colour) in the Spring can refresh a space beautifully.
