Ideas for decorating the downstairs loo

The downstairs loo is a room where you can be bold when it comes to decorating. You don’t spend much time in there and it’s such a small space, making it less of a scary commitment, and the perfect opportunity to be as creative as you like. Here’s some ideas for bringing some joy into this tiny room.

A statement sink

There’s not much space for furniture in the downstairs loo, which gives you an opportunity to make a statement out of one of the only things in there - the sink.

You could choose a colourful sink, or one made from an unusual material. Alternatively, a bog standard sink with a unique tap can also act as a statement in this small space.

Colour drenching

Colour drenching is the process of painting every single surface in a room the same colour. This works really well in small spaces and creates a little cave of a room whilst bringing some character with colour.

When colour drenching I suggest painting the ceiling, trim and skirting boards for the full effect.

Jazzy wallpaper

There are so many creative and unique wallpapers out there, and whilst it might feel like a bit of a risk to use these in your home, the downstairs loo is the perfect place to put some unexpected wallpaper.

Thoughtful lighting

Why go for bog standard downlights when you could add some subtle wall lighting? Adding some additional lighting helps to elevate a space. A backlit mirror adds a soft glow, or wall mounted lighting above or to the side of a mirror is always a useful lighting element in a bathroom.

LED lighting underneath floating furniture helps make a space feel bigger while acting as an additional light source.

Classic panelling

If you’re less keen on anything too bold in the downstairs loo, panelling is a classic way of adding some texture and interest to a wall without taking up any space. Adding a lip to the top of the panelling also provides some useful surface space.

Wall tiles

There’s a wall tile out there to suit everyone’s taste - whether you want classic subway tiles, colourful squares, geometric patterns, or anything in between. You can either bring these half way up the wall, or for a bolder look tile right to the top.

Statement flooring

Because there’s not much space in a downstairs loo, we can make the most of the floor as a design feature. Geometric tiles in particular look great in a small space, when the walls are more pared back this lets the floor act as the statement.
