Fun ways to decorate your home this Christmas

It’s cold outside, it’s getting darker earlier, Mariah Carey is on the radio, dad is navigating a years worth of dust getting the big box of Christmas decorations from the attic, and mum and I are preparing to decorate the house.

I always get the nostalgic warm and fuzzies around this time of year as I start to bring the festive touch to my home. Here are some fun ways that you can bring some Christmas into your home this year.

Swap in some festive prints

The Ho Ho Ho print temporarily replaced what was in the frame, and spot Mia and Vincent with their Santa hats…

This is a quick and easy way of updating your decor for Christmas. Temporarily swap out some prints that you’ve already framed with Christmas ones. Etsy is a great place to look for reasonably priced Christmas prints.

If you don’t want to do that, last year I bought a pack of small stick on felt Santa hats and stuck them onto any characters in our art. Slightly ridiculous but did make me chuckle.

Make the bed festive

Bringing out the Christmas bedding always puts me into a festive mood. You can either go down the subtle route with delicate pattern and colours to match your existing scheme, or you can go full throttle. If you really want to ham it up, add some festive throw pillows and a blanket.

Go all out on a Christmas mantel

If you have a mantelpiece, this is the perfect focal point to add a really dramatic bit of Christmas styling. Look no further than Nicki Bamford-Bowes for mantel piece styling inspiration.

Whether you want to go all out or more pared back, foliage, bunting, candles and lights make a wonderful addition to your mantel at Christmas.

Add lights to your plants

Twinkly fairy lights are an obvious way to bring some cosy festivity to your home this Christmas, and why should they just be reserved for the Christmas tree? Wrap them around your plants (gently) to give them a festive glow.

Decorate the bannisters

Since they’re often one of the first things you see in a home, your bannisters are a great place to start the festive feeling in your home. Wrap them with a big classy garland with fairy lights, or I also love a bit of Christmas bunting, the quirkier the better.

Don’t forget scent

Finally - smell is such a powerful sense and can bring back memories stronger than any other sense, so don’t forget to include some Christmassy candles when you’re decorating this year.

We have a fir-tree smelling candle (Yankee Candle - “The Perfect Tree”) which only comes out in December, and just one sniff of it instantly transports me to Christmas time.

Well I hope that’s got you into the Christmas spirit because it certainly has done for me!
