How to style a bed

There’s something about a well styled bed that makes you just want to dive into it - it’s the cherry on the cake of a well designed bedroom. Here’s my step by step guide to style your bed so that it’ll be the star of your bedroom.

1. Base sheets

Starting off with the basics, you need a good base sheet to build upon.

I prefer a fitted sheet, because I can’t be faffing around with trying to origami my bed sheets into place. You can’t go wrong with a classic white fitted sheet, or you could also add a little bit of colour to peep through from under the duvet.

2. The pillows

Extra plump pillows, M&S. Imagine the duvet isn’t on yet.

One of my Instagram followers one described a flat cushion as “sad ravioli” - and sad ravioli is exactly what we want to avoid with the pillows.

Fluff up your pillows up so they look fuller (punch them if you have to) and then most importantly; prop them up against the headboard, not flat on the bed. This step is essential.

3. The duvet

After you’ve added the pillows, then you add the duvet. We don’t want to add the duvet before the pillows, because we don’t want the pillows to be on top of the duvet. Instead, fold it back on itself by just under half.

If you really want to go the extra mile and turn your bed into a squishy cloud, then two duvets are the answer.

4. Decorative cushions

At this point we can add some decorative cushions, leaning against our propped up pillows. The optimal number of decorative cushions on a bed is a controversial topic, but I like to go for 2 (excluding the lumbar cushion, step 5) but if you really fancied, you could go for two large ones, and two smaller ones.

This is your chance to mix it up a bit, add a bit of colour or pattern, and you can easily change these if you want to switch up your style a little bit.

5. Lumbar or rectangular cushions

This step is optional, but I really like a long lumbar cushion or a bolster cushion to lay across the two decorative cushion. It gives a different shape, and I like the look of the cushions all reducing in height as they go down the bed.

6. Throws

Finally, a lovely big bed throw at the end of the bed adds some nice cosy texture to finish it off. You could go with one or two throws, depending on the weather and your personal preference.
