How to maximise storage in kids rooms

One of the number one issues I hear from clients about their homes is a lack of storage, and this is particularly true for children’s bedrooms. Kids often have a multitude of belongings which accumulate and create clutter which often then spills out into the rests of the home. Here’s a few ideas for maximising the space in your kids bedrooms, to create a well organised, comfortable and efficient space.

Use the vertical space

An effective way to use all the space in a room is to think vertically, and use the walls. Sturdy wall mounted shelves and bookcases that reach to the ceiling can be used for toys, books, and decorations. You can use all of the vertical space in a room by also using the back of doors to hang pockets or baskets, and inside of wardrobe doors for storing smaller bits.

Multifunctional furniture

Multifunctional furniture in a kids room can help to provide extra storage whilst making the most of the space that you have. Seating is the obvious example - like ottomans or benches which can double up as trunks with hidden storage. Versatile furniture like folding tables, modular shelves and sofa-beds can also adapt to changing needs.

Flexible wardrobe solutions

Flexible wardrobes, like the Ikea Pax, are a great way to maximise storage and adapt to the changing needs of a kids' room. Modular or adjustable shelving units can accommodate their clothes and accessories, allowing you to configure the wardrobe based on your storage requirements.

Under-bed storage

Under the bed is a valuable unused space, and there’s plenty of containers designed specifically to utilise this space, or even beds with built in drawers. It’s probably better to keep things that you don’t necessarily need all the time (like out of season clothes) under here, and consider labelling things for easy access.

Use baskets

Finally, having a few baskets in the room is useful for tidying up at the end of the day, or keeping the most frequently used toys in. It helps contain and hide the clutter without completely putting it away.
