10 ways to incorporate plants into your interior design

Plants are a great way to add some colour, energy and life into a room. Not only do they look great, but they help purify the air, reduce stress and increase productivity. If you’re looking to add some greenery into your home, here’s 10 ways to incorporate plants into your interior design.

1. Hang plants from the ceiling

If you’re short on wall space, hanging plants from the ceiling adds some greenery into your space without taking up much room. It also draws the eye up and adds some interest at different heights which is always a good thing.

You can either attach a hook into a ceiling joist, or you can also attach a shelf bracket to a wall and hang the plants from that. Trailing plants like pothos, lipstick plants and hoya linearis look great in hanging baskets.

2. Create a focal point with a statement plant

I love a large plant to add a bit of drama and a focal point into a room. Buying well established and older large plants can be expensive, so you can either be patient and grow from smaller, or you can usually find cheaper plants like palms at a large size already.

Putting a plant on a small stool or side table also helps to make it look even bigger and take up more height.

3. Style your shelves

Shelves are the perfect place to add bit of greenery, whether it’s a trailing plant, a succulent or anything in between.

Trailing plants look good at the top of a shelf cascading over the ones below, and smaller ones can be added to give some scale amongst the other decorative items or books on your shelves.

4. Create a statement wall

If you’ve got a blank wall, rather than hanging art, shelves or a mirror, another impactful use of the space is a statement plant wall. That could either be a wall panel made up of living plants (like moss), a series of plants hanging from the wall, or I also love the idea of a propagation wall.

5. Add humidity loving plants to your bathroom

Bathrooms can sometimes be a bit sterile due to the hard and shiny surfaces of tile, which is why it’s always lovely to introduce a bit of green to add some nature and warmth.

Plants like ferns love the moist atmosphere in a bathroom so they’ll be very happy by a window near a shower.

6. Create a vertical garden

If you don’t have lots of outdoor space or want an impactful wall, a vertical garden is a great way to add some greenery without taking up much floor space.

You can use succulents and trailing plants for display, or create an indoor herb garden in your kitchen.

7. Use plants as a backdrop

Plants are a great styling tool, and work well placed behind or next to other pieces of furniture to add some depth and scale. A large plant behind a piece of furniture, or on a table next to some furniture looks great.

8. Create a terrarium

Terrariums are a great way to display small plants and add some greenery to your home. You can create one using a glass container and a variety of plants like moss, succulents, and air plants. These are easy to care for and can be displayed on a coffee table or shelf.

9. Fill an empty corner

Empty corners can be transformed into a green and attractive space with a tall plant. You can use a large pot to add height and make a statement.

10. Add a plant to your workspace

Finally, plants are known to reduce stress and improve productivity, so they’re the perfect addition to an office space. You can place hanging plants on shelves around your desk, a smaller plant on your desk, or a large one in the corner.
