Design inspiration for small bedrooms

If you’ve got a small bedroom, sometimes it can be hard to know how to tackle the design without making it feel even smaller. But a small room doesn’t have to be bland - here’s some ideas to help make the most of a small bedroom.

The headboard ledge

This is a clever way of getting a bit more surface space without having to sacrifice a lot of floor space. By building out a ledge about 15cm from the wall, you can create a handy space which can even take the place of a bedside table, if you’re really tight on space.

Under bed storage

There are loads of solutions for using the space around your bed for storage. Ottoman beds are good for storing bits that you don’t need to access too often (like seasonal things). If you need to get access a bit more often, then there are a lot of pull out storage options like the Fredvang system from Ikea.

Multi-functional bedside tables

If you need a chest of drawers but don’t have space for it in the room, then put it next to your bed for a multifunctional piece of furniture which acts as a bedside table too.

This can be applied to other pieces of furniture too, like desks.

Neutral colours

One way to avoid a busy feeling bedroom (and small spaces can often feel a bit busy) is to go for a neutral and earthy colour scheme. Keeping all the colours similar to each other creates a really calm feeling, and you can avoid this from becoming a bit bland and stark by adding lots of soft textures and lighting.

Colour drenching

Alternatively, if you don’t fancy a neutral colour palette, go the opposite way and use colour drenching. This is a technique where you cover every surface in one colour - think woodwork, trims, doors, the floors, the ceiling, curtains, the walls…

This can actually make a room feel more spacious as the edges and shapes don’t stand out as much.

Bed position

It’s ok to put the bed in front of a window, if that’s the best place for it to go. Just make sure you think about window treatments - maybe your curtains will need to be on a track or instead go for roman blinds, so that you can open and close them easily.

Built-in storage

One of the best ways to get the most out of a small space is to utilise built in furniture. This way you can make the most of any alcoves or spaces in the room without blocking a lot of the floor space with bulky furniture. A good carpenter will be able to squeeze as much storage as possible out of the space, as well as tailor any storage solutions to your individual requirements.

Ceiling

When you’ve not got much floor space for decorating, look up towards the fifth wall! Either wallpapering or painting the ceiling is a good option for a bedroom, especially because you’ll get to admire it when you’re in bed.

Keeping the walls relatively neutral is the trick to making this one work - you don’t want busy walls and a busy ceiling.

Statement curtains

And finally, if you’ve not got much space in a room for decor, bringing in some colour or pattern with the curtains is a great way to add a design statement without taking up any space.
