10 perfect dining table and chair combinations
The hunt for a dining table can be a tricky one, especially if you’re also trying to source chairs to go with it. The options are endless, so I’ve curated 10 combinations that I love to help narrow it down.
1. Mid century & wishbone
Starting off with a classic mid-century table, streamlined, well built and most likely in a wood like teak, oak or walnut.
I love the wood on wood look and wishbone chairs are a beautiful feature even on their own .
2. Light wood & black chairs
If you’re not into a matchy-matchy table and chairs, then a high contrast look can also look really striking and stylish.
In terms of the chair and table style, I’d go for something more on the simple and streamlined side like the spindle backed or Galb chairs above. Since you’ve already got high contrast between the table and chairs, you don’t want to add anything too fussy.
3. Glass & upholstered chairs
Glass dining tables are a good option if you have a little less space - since being able to see through the table means it doesn’t visually take up too much space.
Glass itself can be quite cold and is very hard, so I like the idea of balancing that and bringing some colour or pattern with comfy upholstered chairs.
4. Marble & wood
Marble (and marble effect) is great way of adding some subtle texture into a room. It’s a natural material so I like the idea of pairing it with natural wood tones.
5. Farmhouse & mismatched
I really like a big farmhouse table, something that looks like it’s been loved for a long time and has seen many family dinners.
Mismatched dining chairs look like they’ve been curated over time, and help add to that charming and relaxed look.
6. Wood & colourful Eames
Eames shell chairs have been popular for a while now, probably because they pretty much go with every style of table and they’re functional and easy to clean.
I love the idea of making them into a colourful focal point and mismatching them around a light wood (or even a white) dining table.
7. White & light wood
One for the minimalists amongst us - I think white on white can look a little clinical but I love the idea of going for a white dining table and then a chair in a very light wood finish. It helps bring a little bit of needed natural texture.
8. All black
On the other end of the spectrum, black on black can look great too. Bonus points if you have other black elements in the room (lighting, pieces of furniture) then the result could be a really striking look.
Because black can look a little clinical (just like white), so I love how in the first example above it has been contrasted with upholstered chairs to bring some softness. In the second example, the wood grain which you can see on the table brings some natural texture. Notice how both have been styled with flowers/grasses too.
9. Table & armchairs
This option requires a fair bit of space, as armchairs obviously take up more room than a smaller dining chair.
If you have room and a large dining table, armchairs provide an extremely comfy option - perfect for dinners that go on all evening and into the night. If you don’t have loads of space but like the look, try adding just one to the head of the table.
10. Table & bench
This is a good option for if you’re in a smaller space, because a bench takes up less space visually and helps make the dining table look a little less cluttered. They don’t have to be uncomfortable - an upholstered bench will be nice to sit on although of course you wouldn’t get the back support that you would from a chair.
If you like the look but still want the option of chairs, try having a bench on one side, and chairs on the other.
