The best house plants for every room

Spring is here, so what better time to fill your house with some new plants? I’ve put together some of my favourite plants, for every type of space.

Low light

Snake plant

If you have a dark room, I’d recommend a snake plant. They are really easy to care for, they don’t need much water (only when their soil feels dry) and can handle low light very well.

Bright light

Monstera

Monstera, from Leaf Envy

A monstera is a really popular house plant because they are relatively easy to care for, and are a great statement plant with fabulous big holey leaves. Whilst they won’t like constant full sun, they’ll grow happily and sprout new leaves when in a bright spot.

Big spaces

Bird of paradise

The Bird of Paradise also known as Strelitzia Nicolai or Banana Leaf plant, is a fabulous plant that can grow really tall (up to 2m) and is perfect for filling large spaces. The giant leaves make for a great statement too.

It’ll be happiest in a bright spot (but not direct sun) with it’s soil kept moist in the spring and summer, but not soggy.

Trailing

Lipstick plant

There are a few common trailing house plants to choose from including Pothos, String of Pearls and String of Hearts, but I particularly like Lipstick plants because they’ll reward you for looking after them, by flowering with bright red lipstick shaped flowers in the spring and summer.

Stick it on a shelf or hang it from a hook and it’ll look great all year round.

Quick growers

Monkey mask

Related to the monstera, the monkey mask plant also features leaves with holes, and is on a smaller scale. If placed in bright (but not direct) light, it’ll grow quickly and can either be trailed up a pole or left to hang down.

Unkillable

Cast Iron (Aspidistra)

Aspidistra, from Patch Plants

Aspidistra is also called the Cast Iron plant because it is virtually indestructible. I have a few and they will handle severe neglect; you can forget to water them, leave them in a dark room and they’ll be just fine. In fact mine lives on top of a radiator and it’s lasted years.
