How to design a toddler’s bedroom

Young children’s rooms are so fun to design - with functionality meeting imagination and creativity. If you’re looking to do-up your little one’s room, or you just fancy some inspiration, here’s how to plan and design a toddler’s bedroom.

Safety first

Before getting to the fun part, making sure your toddler’s room is safe to explore is the number one priority. Make sure all furniture is attached to the wall, plug sockets are covered, and cords for blinds are at an appropriate height and out of reach.

Think about the floor

Children are obviously messy, and the floors of their bedroom are likely to take a bashing. Because of this, think about a floor that’s going to be easy to clean and remove stains. That might be engineered wood, laminate or LVT if possible. If you prefer the feel of carpet, I’d recommend buying washable rugs to layer, at least while they’re younger and more messy.

Use functional furniture

Functional furniture helps you to get the most out of a room whilst maximising the space that you have. Younger children’s rooms need more floor space to play, so you might want to think about smaller furniture which is also appropriate for their size. Furniture with built-in storage is always great, especially if it’s at a height that your child can access.

Window treatments

This is a really important aspect of a child’s room, because blocking out the light when it’s brighter in the mornings is often key for preventing them from getting up too early! I like the look of doubling up on window treatments, like using black out blinds combined with heavy curtains. It prevents any light getting in whilst also providing texture.

Lighting

Lighting is key for setting the atmosphere in a room, which is especially important in a bedroom. Think about soft lighting to help create a cosy feel at bedtime, directed light for story time, and nightlights if needed.

Personalisation

It’s always fun to get your toddler’s input on their bedroom, and you can use something that your child loves as a starting point for your inspiration. Gallery walls are a great way to bring in personality and style whilst also being easily updatable as their interests change.
