Banquette seating ideas and inspiration

Banquette seating is a comfortable and stylish way to add seating to your kitchen or dining room, whether you’ve got a small space or a large area to fill. Here are some ideas for installing banquette seating in your home.

Storage underneath

One of the benefits of banquette seating is that it can be used as a multifunctional piece of furniture; in a small space it can provide much needed additional storage. Whether it’s a lift up lid, drawer or door fronts, you can fit bulky objects into bench seating making it functional as well as stylish.

Floating banquette

Most banquette seating is installed to the floor, but floating seating looks really sleek and gives the illusion of more space, as you can see the floor underneath. Just make sure it’s built by an experienced carpenter who can make it as sturdy as it needs to be.

Wall hung cushions

I really love this casual wall hung cushion look, either hanging from a bar or straps attached to the wall. One of the benefits of this approach is that the cushions can be easily removed and cleaned.

Integrated into the kitchen island

This is a really great space saving solution. You’re saving space that would be required to pull chairs out from the dining table, whilst also butting it up against the island. This is a great social layout too - whoever is doing the cooking in the kitchen or on the island can easily chat to those sitting at the table.

Fluted back cushions

Banquette seating is really comfortable, especially if you use well padded cushions. Fluted back cushions provide a comfy and stylish back rest. If you have a young or particularly messy family, I’d suggest using a wipeable or stain-resistant fabric so that you can keep it clean.

Sofa style

I really like this alternative to the traditional box shaped banquette. If your design style is more minimalist, then a sofa style banquette with legs looks really great. I also like the idea of including sofa arms for extra comfort.

Curved with a round table

This one requires a bit of planning, choose your table first so your seating can follow the curve. The result is a really pleasing looking dining area which is comfy and fits perfectly.
