Styling ideas for Halloween

As spooky season approaches, it’s time to talk about Halloween decor. Even if you prefer your home to look strictly stylish, there’s always room for a bit of fun and creativity. Here’s some ideas for embracing the subtle and the eerie…

Floating candles

For the Harry Potter fans amongst us, bring the great hall of Hogwarts to your living room with floating candles - they look particularly good hanging over a mantelpiece. They’re not expensive, (check out Dunelm or Amazon) and can hang from Command hooks on your ceiling. You can even get remote controlled ones to add some magical glow.

Tasteful pumpkins

What is Halloween without a pumpkin? Style any corner in your home with a pumpkin (or two), or use smaller ones on counter tops or shelves. If you’d prefer to keep things a bit more muted, there’s plenty of pumpkin decor available to buy which is a touch more tasteful than the classic orange pumpkin, or you could even have a go at painting one.

Little ghosties

I made three tiny ghost sculptures recently with quick dry clay which I’m using as shelf decor - they’re very subtle and cute too. There’s plenty of ghost DIYs available online using all sorts of materials like clay, newspaper and cheesecloth.

All the bats

A cloud of bats flying up a wall makes for a great dramatic moment, I did this once on our living room window which faces the road outside and it looked great from inside and out. You can buy little stick-on bats or even make your own, then cover whichever surface you feel like.

Cobwebs

Easy method: don’t clean your house for a few months in the lead up to Halloween. Less easy method: use thread to create spider webs, which looks particularly effective across shelves. Or, you can buy cobweb material and drape it over a mirror or piece of art.

Spooky front door wreath

Unless you’re someone who hides when trick or treater’s arrive, you can decorate the outside of your home for Halloween too. Seasonal wreaths are becoming more popular outside of just Christmas, this could be a great DIY project or otherwise there’s plenty of creative wreaths to buy on Etsy.

Ghoulish garlands

Garlands aren’t just for Christmas! Hang a spooky garland on a mantelpiece, a mirror, the stairs, a piece of furniture… the options are endless. This is another good DIY project, all you need is some string and paper.
