Ideas for revamping your outdoor space
Summer is well and truly here this week, so naturally we’re all wanting to spend a bit more time outside, either hiding in the shade (me) or soaking up the sun. There’s plenty of ways you can zhuzh up your outdoor or garden space without having to dig the whole thing up and spend thousands on landscaping… here’s some ideas.
Add lighting
Lighting is the key to making any space feel appealing and comfortable - inside or outside. There’s nothing quite like sitting outside as the sun goes down surrounded by twinkly pontoon lights. If you don’t have an electricity source outside then there’s plenty of solar powered or battery powered options available.
Invest in comfy furniture
Garden furniture is another essential factor in creating an outdoor space which you’re going to want to spend time in. Have a think about what you’re most likely to be doing outside and then look for appropriate furniture - will you be mostly lounging in which case you might want a long sofa with an adjustable backrest? Or if you’ll be mostly socialising, an L shaped sofa with a coffee table that turns into a dining table would work well.
Don’t forget soft furnishings
Soft furnishings like cushions and rugs help to create a comfy and inviting space outdoors - just make sure that they’re suitable for outside and you’ll need somewhere to store them. I like an outdoor rug for some extra colour and pattern, and for something soft under your feet (unless of course you have grass!)
Paint your fence
I did this in our garden a couple of summers ago and the difference it made was huge. Giving some new life to an old fence by painting it is a great way to revamp your garden. I particularly love the look of a dark fence because it makes green plants really pop.
Set the table
If you’re going to be socialising or eating outside, there’s something really fun about having a table set with a tablecloth, candles and placemats. I think it’s because it adds a bit of occasion, and who doesn’t like dining somewhere special outside?
Refresh your plant pots
And finally… what is a garden without plants? If you have a paved or decked area in your garden, sometime these can feel a bit sparse, so it helps to add some greenery via potted plants and trees. Group these together and have a mix of height, colour and sizes for a styled look.
