How to decorate with the colour blue

Blue is one of my favourite colours to decorate with, it’s unusual you’ll see a project from me which doesn’t have blue somewhere. But it can be a bit tricky - it’s a cool colour so can sometimes make a room feel cold or sparse. Fear not, here’s some advice on how to use this fabulous colour in your interiors.

Consider the orientation of your room

Since it’s a naturally cool colour, blue can often make a room feel cold. To combat this, you can pick a blue with an undertone which suits the orientation (and therefore light temperature) of your room.

Rooms which are North facing tend to look and feel colder, so going for a blue with a warmer undertone (i.e. yellow) or even a teal or turquoise, will help combat this. South facing rooms are bright and warm, so can handle any shade of blue without feeling cold.

Decide how dark you’d like to go

There’s a blue to suit your scheme whether you’d like to go light, dark, or somewhere in the middle. Dark blue is a great choice especially for a bedroom as it’s a naturally relaxing colour, and the darkness only adds to the cosiness. Mid to light blue works well in any type of room, light blue can look particularly pretty in a room which is flooded with light.

Consider what the room is used for

Blue is well known to be a naturally calming colour, it calms the mind and helps with concentration, so it works well for rooms which you want to be relaxed or quiet in. On the opposite side of the spectrum, red is an energetic colour, great for rooms where you want to be alert.

Pair it with bolder colours

Blue is a great backdrop to other colours and can be paired with many bolder ones. Red gives a fantastic contrast against a light blue, and it acts as a great background for a mix of colours and patterns. Jewel tones also look great with dark navy blue.

Or create a neutral scheme

Alternatively, you can also use blue with a more neutral colour scheme, playing into the calming properties of the colour. Creams, white and natural browns and wood tones all look great with blue.

Mix hues of blue

If you can’t get enough blue, then layering the colour also looks really good and gives some depth to a colour scheme.
