5 tips to make your home cosy this Autumn

Autumn is by far my favourite season of the year. I think it’s the combination of the crisp weather, the changing colours, and the idea of evenings at home, snuggled up warmly with the fire on.

I always look forward to making the house as cosy as possible, so today I’m sharing some tips to help bring a cosy Autumn feel to your home, in preparation for hunkering down for the colder evenings.

1. Introduce Autumnal colours

One of my favourite things about Autumn is the colour palette; green, burnt orange, dusky pink and mustard are all up my street. Just introducing a few of these autumnal colours into your home will bring warmth and depth and will immediately up the cosy factor.

There’s no need to repaint the walls, just a few touches here and there with soft furnishings will make a difference. Use a colour scheme generator to find some autumnal colours that go with your existing colour scheme.

2. Add ambient lighting

Lighting is by far one of the easiest ways to create a cosy feeling in your home. WIth the evenings getting darker earlier, there’s an opportunity to add some ambience, warmth and hygge to your space. We want to imitate the soothing glow of a fire; so any lights that you add try to go for a warmer temperature bulb.

Turn off the overhead light and add some ambient lighting, some examples you could try include:

  • A group of candles (battery powered or real) in hurricane vases

  • Fairy lights draped over the mantelpiece

  • Add table lamps in the corners of the room

  • Tea lights gathered on a tray on a coffee table

3. Texture with rugs and throws

Autumn is the perfect time to snuggle on the sofa in front of the fireplace, the TV or reading a book, so add some throws (even better if they are autumnal colours) to your sofa and a couple of extra cushions. If you’ve got hardwood floors, add a rug to the floor to bring some warmth to the space too.

Think about your bed too - make it extra warm and inviting by adding throws to the end of the bed and a couple more pillows.

4. Foliage

One of the most gorgeous things about Autumn is the way that nature changes colour - and we can definitely bring some of that nature into our homes. Dried flowers, greenery, grasses and leaves can all be used to make really lovely displays which not only look great but smell lovely and autumnal too.

5. Autumnal accessories

Finally, you can add some accessories to finish off. There’s something very cosy about decorating with books - maybe it’s the idea of settling in a chair next to a fireplace and reading. A few other Autumnal accessories you can add could include:

  • Wood accessories; driftwood, bowls

  • Pumpkins

  • Leaf garlands

  • Art

So has that inspired you to give a room a little cosy Autumnal makeover? I hope so!
