Small finishing touches that will complete a room

Sometimes, for whatever reason, a room might just not feel finished. It can be hard to put your finger on why or what’s missing, but the small details have the power to tie together a room and make it feel considered and comfortable. Here are some small finishing touches that will complete a space.

Styled shelves

Open shelving can sometimes feel cluttered and unpleasant to look at. Culling and curating what’s on your shelves, and allowing items to breathe instantly creates a styled and considered look.

Updated switches and sockets

They might seem like such a small detail, but we interact with the switches and sockets in our homes pretty much every day, and they can contribute to a design rather than be an oversight.

Rather than the basic white plastic, there are plenty of alternative options, although if you are switching these out on a large scale the costs can add up, so you might want to do this in phases!

Replacement handles

This is a great way of freshening up an existing piece of furniture or built-in. You’d be surprised how much a change of handle can change the design of something - like adding a contemporary handle to a more traditional piece of furniture.

Loose item storage

If your space feels unfinished, it might be because you have a lack of storage for small items. An easy way to resolve this (without having to buy additional furniture) is to make sure you’ve got some place to put small things - whether that’s baskets, boxes, trays or dishes. By giving everything it’s own home, it helps to make a space feel a bit more considered and less cluttered.

Wall shelves

Bare walls can also contribute to the feeling that a room isn’t quite finished or that there’s something missing. A well positioned shelf or ledge adds interest and style without much hard work - whether you use it to display photos, art, plants or objects.

Wall art

A well-proportioned piece of art on the wall can make all the difference to how a space feels. If it’s over a sofa, aim for 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the sofa, likewise for if it’s above a console or sideboard. Hanging art also helps to bring your personality into a room, as well as colour and pattern.

Plants

Adding plants to your interiors makes a room feel more alive and lived in. Strategically placed plants can make a design statement too - by drawing your eye across a room and adding scale or drama.

Cushions and throws

Finally, a very easy way to finish off (or even update) a room is by adding cushions and throws. They contribute colour, texture, pattern and comfort to a space.
